Resumen

Forty years ago, on August 6, 1962, Jamaica became an independent and sovereign nation after more than three hundred years of colonialism under the British Empire. The purpose of this presentation is to provide an overview of the political, economic, and cultural development of the country over these forty years and to evaluate its role in the international community. The paper is structured in five sections: first, the historical background, followed by four sections accounting for the stages in Jamaica’s transition to a modern nation in a global context: first, the period immediately after independence; second, the decade of the 1970s; third, the 1980s; and fourth, the post–Cold War period.
