Abstract
The carnival is an act of cultural resistance that made an early appearance in the New World, and still preserves the memory of the African diaspora. Black guilds and brotherhoods of saints were a stepping-off point for the carnival in the Americas. The common origin of carnivals in different Caribbean countries goes back not only to guilds and brotherhoods, but also to drumming festivals that Africans and Black Creoles celebrated. Basing her study on the carnival in Barranquilla, Colombia, the author, indicating the rich terrain that the carnival offers for study, demonstrates that the Africa-America connection is still a vital one.
