El tratado Clayton-Bulwer y la disputa por Belice

Resumen

Firmado en abril de 1850, el Tratado Clayton-Bulwer pretendió conciliar los intereses británicos y norteamericanos en América Central. Los propósitos primordiales del acuerdo fueron restringir las ambiciones territoriales de Gran Bretaña y de los Estados Unidos en el área, así como evitar el control exclusivo del futuro canal interoceánico en Centroamérica. La disputa por Belice, en el contexto de las distintas interpretaciones al propio tratado, y los sucesivos acuerdos que firmaron hasta el inicio del actual siglo, representan un largo capítulo de tensiones diplo-máticas que la autora analiza.

Abstract

Signed in April 1850, the Clayton-Bulwer Treaty ostensibly reconciled British and North American interests in Central America. The original goals of the treaty were to restrict the territorial ambitions of Great Britain and the United States in the area, as well as to prevent exclusive control over the future interoceanic canal in Central America. The struggle for Belize, in the context of the different interpretations of the treaty, and the successive agreements signed until the beginning of this century, constitute the long chapter of diplomatic tension analyzed by the author.

Le Traité Clayton-Bulwer, signé en 1850, se proposait de concilier les intérêts britanniques et ceux des États-Unis en Amérique Centrale. Au premier chef il s'agissait de restreindre les ambitions territoriales de la Grande Bretagne et des États-Unis dans la région et d'y éviter un controle exclusif du futur canal interoceánique. La "Disputé" pour le Bélize dans le contexte des diverses interprétations du Traité et des accords successifs qui furent signés jusqu'au début du siècle actuel, représente un ample chapitre des tensions diplomatiques que l'auteur se propose d' analyser.

Samenvatting

Het Verdrag Clayton-Bulwer werd in april 1850 ondertekend en wenste de Britse en Noordamerikaanse belangen in Centraalamerika met el kaar te verzoenen. Een van de belangrijkste doelstellingen van het verdrag wasde beperking van de territoriale expansiedrift van Engeland en de Verenigde Staten in dit gebied, als het voorkomen van een exclusieve controle op de toekomstige interoceanische kanaal. De auteur analyseert de diplomatieke spanningen, die ontstaan waren van wege de verschillende interpretaties van dit verdrag en van andere verdragen, die daarna waren ondertekend.
